Self-Assessment
English is a universal language. However, as a full Korean born in South Korea, I did not learn English as my first language. After moving to Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey at the age of 10, I was inevitably exposed to English everywhere I turned, and as a result, English became my primary language. Although learning it was tough at first, I was able to quickly pick up the flow of this universal language. Adaptation is one of my greatest strengths; it allows me to absorb new subjects, languages and even games at an admirable speed. I believe that with the advantage, I am able to learn how to write in different generic forms as well as different styles and tones that comes with each form. However, even though I am a quick-learner, it still requires a lot of energy and effort for me to understand in-depth into the topic. For example, for this Writing39C course, I expect to put in my best effort so that I may receive the best result because I know from past experiences that solely relying on my skill will not earn me the grade I desire. I also know that with my best effort, I am able to achieve almost anything. And also knowing about Instructor, Jaya Dubey, I expect to receive the fair grade I deserve, which is comprised of my effort and result. Another weakness that I have is specificity in my arguments and commentary; I am told in every writing course that I have interesting but surface-level arguments that do not reach its full potential due to the specificity of my argument such as HOW it effects my audience and HOW this evidence supports my arguments. In Writing39C, I expect to address this issue by spending more time on each sentence; instead of spitting out word after word, I intend to choose my words more carefully. With my lacking commentary, I will improve it by performing similar writing strategy as my arguments. Another weakness is finding relevant and effective research for my arguments. I was not aware of this issue in my writing until last quarter’s Writing39B, which opened my eyes to the world of research. I realized that research is not just Google or Wikipedia. It’s actually the opposite; it is searching databases, encyclopedias and even libraries. In Writing39C, I am going to take a step further in improving my researching skills by going to the library for hands-on research and online database searches.
For me, writing, research and learning is like the domino effect. In order to write an effective essay, research must be done; and when research is done, I am learning and familiarizing myself with the material to increase my ethos. Each idea relies upon each other to be effective. As I previously stated, research is my weakest area of writing; therefore, I am going to attend office hours and perhaps writing centers to collect effective resources. I plan on not only collecting these data but also to learn HOW to collect these resources myself so that I won’t be fully dependent on others for researching help.
Regarding the topic of urban living and sustainability, I was not fully aware of the significant problems around the U.S. The first day of lecture sparked my interest for this class since I lived in Irvine for most of my life, which is placing fairly well in urban living and sustainability compared to cities such as Los Angeles, California or Phoenix, Arizona. Because I wasn’t aware, I have more work cut out for me but that is something I am willing to do in order to succeed in this class.
The topic of food deserts across America and how it catalyzes health problems which provokes economical problems. Food deserts are certain areas of America that only have fast food restaurants and liquor stores, and in turn, affordable healthy food are scarce. This encourages the citizens to buy and eat mainly unhealthy food which drives up their health costs which ultimately affects the entire nation since food deserts often occur in rural areas with low income, which most likely means these patients are most likely without insurance.
Although my topic is very rough, I am interested in it and I know that it is a significant enough of a problem for me to write about and figure out some kind of a solution for it. I am looking forward to this class and the hard work I am going to put into it.
